Droupadi Murmu is the 15th President of India, elected in July 2022 and the first person from a tribal community to hold the office. Born on 20 June 1958 in Uparbeda village, Mayurbhanj district, Odisha, she belongs to the Santali tribal community. She served as Governor of Jharkhand (2015–2021) and as a minister in the Odisha state government under BJD-BJP alliance (2000–2004). Her election as President is seen as a historic moment for India's tribal communities, who make up 8.6% of the population.
