About the Party
Founded by Mamata Banerjee after splitting from Congress in 1998, TMC broke 34 years of Left rule in West Bengal in 2011 and won three consecutive assembly elections (2011, 2016, 2021). It lost WB 2026 to BJP, ending Mamata's 15-year rule. In June 2026 a rebel bloc of TMC Lok Sabha MPs led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar declared support for the NDA — a split the Mamata-led leadership disputes, with anti-defection proceedings pending.
