About
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was India's eleventh President and the country's most beloved modern head of state. Born in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, he was a DRDO and ISRO scientist who led India's ballistic missile development (Agni, Prithvi) and played a key role in the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998. Known as the 'Missile Man of India', his presidency was characterised by direct engagement with young people and students. He died on 27 July 2015 while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1997.
