About
Lal Bahadur Shastri was India's third Prime Minister, serving from June 1964 until his death in Tashkent in January 1966. He led India to a creditable performance in the 1965 war against Pakistan and coined the iconic slogan 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan' to honour soldiers and farmers. A man of modest origin and great personal integrity, he died in Tashkent just hours after signing the Tashkent Declaration — the circumstances of his death remain debated.
