About
Jawaharlal Nehru was independent India's first Prime Minister, serving from 1947 until his death in 1964 — the longest continuous tenure as PM. A central figure in the Indian independence movement and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, he shaped modern India's democratic institutions, foreign policy of non-alignment, and state-led industrialisation. He established the IITs, IIMs, and AIIMS, and was the principal architect of India's secular, socialist republic. His Tryst with Destiny speech on the eve of independence remains one of history's greatest addresses.
