About

Indira Gandhi was India's first and only woman Prime Minister, serving two non-consecutive terms (1966–77 and 1980–84). Daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, she led India to a decisive victory in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War — earning the sobriquet 'Durga' — and oversaw the Pokhran-I nuclear test in 1974. She imposed the Emergency from 1975–1977, suspending civil liberties and jailing opponents, which led to her 1977 electoral defeat. Returning to power in 1980, she ordered Operation Blue Star in the Golden Temple in June 1984 and was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on 31 October 1984.
