About
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee succeeded Jyoti Basu as West Bengal CM in 2000 and led the Left Front government until 2011. A literary-minded politician known for his attempts to modernise the Bengal economy and attract industrial investment, his tenure ended in controversy over the Singur and Nandigram land acquisition agitations (2006–07), which fuelled the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress's historic 2011 victory ending 34 years of Left rule. He received the Padma Vibhushan (2024) but declined it on political grounds.
