About
Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was India's fifth President and the second Muslim to hold the office. Born in Delhi, he was a long-serving Congress leader and Minister before becoming President in 1974. He signed the Emergency proclamation in June 1975 at the request of PM Indira Gandhi, an act that drew criticism. He died in office on 11 February 1977 — the second President to die in office.
