Giani Zail Singh was India's seventh President and the first Sikh to hold the office. Born in Faridkot, Punjab, he was a freedom fighter who served as Chief Minister of Punjab (1972–77) and Union Home Minister before becoming President. His tenure was turbulent — he presided over Operation Blue Star, Indira Gandhi's assassination, and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He had a notably contentious relationship with PM Rajiv Gandhi over constitutional conventions.
