Haradanahalli Doddegowda Deve Gowda served as India's 13th Prime Minister for 11 months as head of the United Front coalition. A longtime Karnataka farmer-politician who served as Karnataka CM (1994–1996), he was a surprise choice for PM. His government fell in April 1997 when Congress withdrew support. He remains politically active as JD(S) leader and patriarch of the Gowda political family in Karnataka, with his son H.D. Kumaraswamy serving as Union Minister.
