About
Morarji Desai was India's first non-Congress Prime Minister, leading the Janata Party coalition to power after the Emergency. A former Deputy PM and Finance Minister under Nehru and Indira Gandhi who had himself been imprisoned during the Emergency, he resigned in July 1979 as the Janata coalition collapsed. Known for his strict asceticism, he was awarded both the Bharat Ratna (India) and Nishan-e-Pakistan — the only person to receive both countries' highest civilian honours.
