Jayaram Jayalalithaa — known simply as 'Amma' — was one of the most dominant political figures in Tamil Nadu history, serving as Chief Minister across four separate tenures. A former Kannada and Tamil film actress who entered politics as a protégé of AIADMK founder M.G. Ramachandran, she became the party's leader after his death in 1987. She served as CM of Tamil Nadu in 1991–96, 2001, 2002–06, 2011–14, and 2015–16, alternating power with M. Karunanidhi's DMK. Known for populist welfare schemes like Amma Canteen, Amma Water, and free colour TVs, she was a powerful and controversial figure who faced multiple corruption cases. She died in office on 5 December 2016.
