About
Mulayam Singh Yadav — 'Netaji' — was one of the dominant figures of Uttar Pradesh politics for four decades, serving as CM three times and founding the Samajwadi Party in 1992. A former wrestler and wrestler-coach from Etawah, he built a powerful OBC-Muslim coalition in UP and served as India's Defence Minister (1996–98) under the United Front government, where he was notable for opposing the Pokhran-II nuclear tests. He was succeeded as SP leader by his son Akhilesh Yadav. He passed away on 10 October 2022.
