Oommen Chandy was Chief Minister of Kerala twice and one of the most popular politicians in the state across all communities. Known as 'Chandy saab' and famed for his open-house access (he held 'Janasamparka' public meetings where anyone could walk in and meet him), he was a veteran of Kerala Congress politics for 50 years, first elected as MLA in 1970. His 2011–16 term oversaw significant infrastructure growth but was also marked by the Solar Scam controversy. He died on 18 July 2024.
