About
Pamulaparti Venkata Narasimha Rao was India's 12th Prime Minister and the architect of the 1991 economic liberalisation reforms that transformed India from a command economy to a market-oriented one. Working with Finance Minister Manmohan Singh, he dismantled the Licence Raj, opened India to FDI, and averted a balance-of-payments crisis. He was also India's first PM from South India and first Telugu-speaking PM. His tenure was marked by the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992 and nuclear tests preparation. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 2024.
