Pranab Mukherjee was India's thirteenth President and the most institutionally accomplished politician to hold the office. Born in Mirati, West Bengal, he served as Finance Minister, External Affairs Minister, Defence Minister, and Commerce Minister at various points — holding virtually every senior portfolio in the Union Cabinet. He was a crucial crisis manager in Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh governments. His decision to accept an invitation to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur in 2018 sparked national debate. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2019.
