Pratibha Devisingh Patil was India's twelfth President and the first woman to hold the office. Born in Nadgaon, Maharashtra, she had a long political career as an MLA, Union Minister, and Governor of Rajasthan before becoming President. Her presidency was largely ceremonial, though she was criticised for an above-average use of the mercy petition power for death row inmates.
