About
Rajendra Prasad was the first President of the Republic of India, serving two full terms from 1950 to 1962. A close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, he presided over the framing and adoption of the Constitution on 26 January 1950. Born in Zeradei, Bihar, he was a distinguished lawyer, freedom fighter, and the only person to serve as both President of the Constituent Assembly and the Republic. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1962.
