About
Rajiv Gandhi became India's youngest Prime Minister at 40 after his mother Indira Gandhi's assassination in 1984, winning the 1984 general election with a historic 404-seat majority. An airline pilot by profession, he ushered in the computer and telecom revolution in India, established Navodaya Vidyalayas, and signed the Rajiv-Longowal Accord and Assam Accord. His tenure was marred by the Bofors scandal and the IPKF Sri Lanka intervention. He was assassinated by an LTTE suicide bomber in Sriperumbudur on 21 May 1991, while campaigning for the 1991 elections.
