Shankar Dayal Sharma was India's ninth President, having served as Chief Minister of Bhopal, Union Cabinet Minister, and Governor of several states. Born in Bhopal, he was Vice President under R. Venkataraman before being elected President. His tenure coincided with the era of coalition politics and economic liberalisation. He was an accomplished academic and legal scholar.
