About
Varahagiri Venkata Giri was India's fourth President, famously elected as an independent candidate after the Congress high command's official nominee lost due to cross-voting in 1969. A veteran trade unionist and freedom fighter from Berhampur, Odisha, he served as a Union Minister and Governor before becoming Vice President. His election was engineered by Indira Gandhi to consolidate her position within Congress. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1975.
